April 16, 2021
Dear Garden Families:

It might be hard to believe, but we only have seven weeks left in the school year. To date, we have held over 130 in-person days of school and students have continued to grow and succeed whether in person or on-line. There is a lot to celebrate, and I want to take a moment to quickly highlight a few of our special moments still ahead. As you all know, we will hold our first ever Virtual Gala next Friday, April 23rd, and we want to thank you already for your generous support of the school, our mission, and most importantly, our students and faculty. And if you haven’t bought your ticket yet, we would love to see you there! Also on the horizon are moving up ceremonies for our Kindergarten and 6th grade students, a Time Capsule celebration for the class of 2021, welcoming events for students joining the Upper Division, a sports awards ceremony, a senior dinner, National Honor Society induction in May, the distribution of yearbooks and an end of year Barbecue and pool party just to name a few. Your efforts as parents have made this year possible and we will never forget that. Thank you and know we will continue to do all we can to make each day here at Garden special. Let’s enjoy these final weeks.

Go Griffins!

Until next time,

Brad Battaglia
Upper Division Head
Director of College Counseling

Griffin Generosity on Display
Thank you to the Garden School Community for your generous donations to the GoFundMe Campaign and to the Super Drive. If you still have items to donate you can bring them to the south side of 34th Avenue between 88th and 89th street. There is a tented area between the two apartment buildings directly across from the building that caught fire. There are a lot of volunteers that will direct you to the drop-off. A special nod to the Student Council for raising $750 for the relief fund bringing Garden student contributions to a total of $900!
Formerly Best Kept Secret in Queens
The enthusiasm for Garden is high and we are excited to welcome our new Garden families this fall. Currently 92% of our anticipated seats for the fall are already spoken for. In fact, we have more returning and new families enrolled for next year already than we did on opening day of this year.

As you know, we are using 2019 enrollment stats for comparison since last year had too many complicated variables. In 2019, on this date, we had 100 fewer students enrolled for the fall and we did not hit our current fall enrollment number until the first week of September!

Thank you for sharing your experiences with prospective families as your stories are resonating with students and families considering Garden. It is obviously an exciting time to join our school and the word is clearly out about the formerly “best kept secret in Queens”.

National Honor for Griffins
This past February, we invited Upper Division students to apply for induction to both National Honor Society and National Junior Honor Society. These organizations recognize students who excel both in the classroom and beyond and we are fortunate to have so many talented and caring individuals within our community. Students have spent the last several weeks preparing and submitting applications along with documented community service hours and we will learn soon who has been selected. We will host an induction ceremony for this year’s admitted students on May 13th. Congratulations to everyone who applied!
Spirit Week Ahead!

Spirit week is upon us! All next week our Upper Division students will be participating in programs designed to build Griffin spirit. Please note we will have special dress options each day of the week such as look-a-like day, celebrity doppelgänger, mismatched and the like. Students will also participate in various outdoor activities to celebrate the enthusiasm we feel for Garden.

Celebrating Earth Day
April 22nd is Earth Day and students in Spanish 7 are marking this global celebration with vivid images and slogans in Spanish. With the help of their personal devices, students searched the internet to convey and illustrate messages such as, "Salvemos la Tierra" (Save the Earth) and "Cuidemos Nuestro Planeta" (Let's Take Care of Our Planet). These colorful posters will decorate the halls of Garden School throughout the month of April while reminding us that, no matter in what language, protecting the environment is everyone's responsibility.
PE with Mr. D
This week we started our Running & Volleyball Unit in our 8th grade PE class. Since we could not have a regular Volleyball season it has been very important for players to stay in shape with our after-school Intramural program and PE classes. One of the hardest skills to master in Volleyball is the serve, especially at this age, so it has been our focus so far and will continue to be so for the next 2-3 weeks.
Geometry with Mr. Zach
In both sections of ninth grade math, the current topic is transformations: all the things you can do to a shape to get an exact copy of it somewhere else. To make these concepts more concrete, Mr. Zach had students complete an interactive activity on the mathematics site Desmos. The activity involved fitting missing pieces into patterns, which involved writing transformation rules for each missing piece. Mixing math with a more visual aspect got everyone excited, and each pair worked through challenging problems before making some breakthroughs! At the end of the activity, the students got to make their own patterns using the rules they had written, giving them a chance to use what they learned in their own ways.
AP World History
AP World History is a large and weighty course. How it is studied with purpose is to focus on causation and effect. The current topic, decolonization, is a perfect microcosm of this. The effects of colonization will be felt throughout the ages; the struggle for self-determination is as worthy a topic as we will study, and the students fully grasp the importance of this.

Garden Parents' Association 2.0 - Calling all interested families!
We were grateful for the opportunity to Co-Chair the Parents’ Association this year and to continue leveraging all of the energy and enthusiasm in our parent community. If you notice in the school’s new strategic plan, the committees want to see our Parents’ Association continue to be a vital support to the mission as we all walk down the Road to 100 together.

There is a lot of history to build upon and the Garden Parents’ Association is excited to carry on many of the traditions that the PTA has shepherded in over the last 96 years (First day of school, Halloween, Book Fair, Teacher Appreciation, Walk-A-Thon, Holiday Gift Fund, etc.) while continuing to support community outreach, parent engagement, welcoming new families, and lending their voices and volunteer hours to our annual Gala.

As we enter the spring season, it is time to think ahead to next year’s leadership and begin to carve out time for collaboration and planning. If you are interested in a leadership position (Chair, a pair of parents who want to Co-Chair, division or grade level leadership), please send an email expressing interest to GPA@gardenschool.org

Sincerely,
Evelyn Frey Zamora & Christine Marengo
21-22 Parent Co-Chairs
